Learn nifty words, feed hungry people.
Yanked from [info]airynd, I bring you the Free Rice website. You identify vocabulary words; if you get them right, the UN donates rice to hungry people, courtesy of donors like the Radisson, Liz Clairborn, and Toshiba. If you get them wrong, you learn a new (and quite possibly fascinatingly obscure) word!

I now know what a nudnik is, and can tell you what a nidiculous being is doing. (:

It's an interesting idea, a twist on hungersite, and the game is not unfun. But after as long as I feel like playing I've only donated 260 grains of rice, and I find myself frustrated by their single synonym definition of words. This isn't Reader's Digest's "Ways to increase your word power", this is like taking the verbal part of the old SAT tests. And when you get a word wrong they still only use one word to define it for you. This has issues, like when they say prodigal = extravagant, where rashly extravagant would be more correct. You wouldn't really want someone ill-educated thusly to walk into the home of someone they respect and say "What prodigal decorations you've put up for your party!" Unless they meant it, of course.
